"I'd rather be a fencepost in Texas than the king of Tenessee."
After living in Dallas all my life, moving to Los Angeles had me a little home sick. As a designer, I took this opportunity to revisit my roots and practice some iconography along the way. Each of these images depicts a familiar sight from downtown Dallas, and is stylized to highlight the details that stand out in my memory.
Adobe Illustrator Process
I started off with a list of the most memorable sights in Dallas, then created an art-board for each of them. On each artboard I included multiple reference photos and a color palette that I wanted to follow. I chose to work in the same project file to ensure that my icons were cohesive and the colors balanced across the set.
Here's a close up of a set of artboards of the Margaret Hunt Hill Bridge, or as I call it, the bridge to nowhere, as it connects downtown Dallas to a warehouse and storage district. I've made the cables of the bridge more stylized, but I prefer how they look in this version, especially with the reflection.
I also experimented with creating repetitive prints with one of the graphics.
